Have you ever noticed the subtle poetic signs our humble and shy God is eager to lavishes us with – especially in our spaces of worship?
It was the 9 am mass at San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey, California (year 2019). I was the cantor and at my normal station to the right of the alter (from parishioners vantage point). It was before mass and I noticed the light was streaming into the church at just the right angle to cause our candles in front of the altar to cast a perfect cross like shadow on the altar. I quickly whipped out my silenced cell phone and took a picture. I remember running into the sacristy after mass excitedly showing the picture to everyone patient enough to receive my bubbling gratitude for this gracious little sign.
What a beautiful reminder of the full story from life, passion, death, resurrection, ascension and the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. There was God telling us His Story and using the backdrop of the altar to host our Feast of Heaven and Earth. Praise be God!
