God said: “This is the sign of the covenant that I am making between me and you and every living creature with you for all ages to come:
I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and every living creature—every mortal being—so that the waters will never again become a flood to destroy every mortal being.
Genesis 9: 12-15
Here are two rainbow stories that are interrelated in a way that only the Great Poet and Love of our God could do.
Back in 2001 I was filled with worries about my aging father. He had a “strained” relationship with God. My desire to see him connect to God grew to a crescendo in my heart. I was driving to Yosemite sitting on the passenger side of the car on a sunny, bright, cloudless day. My eyes were closed, and I was leaning my head against the car’s window praying fervently to God. I was pleading God to show me that my father would be okay. I wanted to be assured that He would receive my Daddy into his arms when the time came to take him home. I was desperate to understand what role God wanted me to play in preparing my father for his death.
My earnest prayers brought me to tears. When I opened my eyes, I beheld the sky and witnessed a rainbow that appeared out of nowhere. I began to bawl with gratitude for God’s gracious love.
In 2019 my family and I were staging a performance of the opera Tryillias that my father and I had written. I inserted a storytelling segment in the performance as an opportunity to give witness to our faith. I told the story above along with a collage of many others. When people walked out at the end of the performance what do you think appeared in the sky? A rainbow….
During the reception following the performance people were so excited. They were running up to me to show me pictures of the rainbow they had taken.
Here’s a link to me sharing the full story of my father’s healing journey and how the opera came into being through the extraordinary graces of God:
